The Seven-Centimetre Predator

This lure can be found in the tackle box of almost every experienced angler, and it’s known as a true all-rounder. Whether you’re after salmon or big pike, this is a great choice. It’s also the perfect bite-sized meal for large perch. And one more thing: don’t forget the Räsänen when fishing in winter. This lure works particularly well for pike and burbot!

The story of Räsänen began on the northern salmon rivers. According to legend, a salmon angler once cut a piece from the edge of a copper coffee pot and hammered it into a spoon lure in the wilderness. Before long, he was back on the riverbank, battling salmon. Salmon were caught with the seven-centimetre spoon across the northern waters, from the Oulujoki and Kemijoki to the Tornionjoki. The story goes that in the early 1900s, Jouni F. Helander, originally from Utsjoki, eventually brought the lure to Rovaniemi to be made by a watchmaker. The distinctive shape and scale pattern of the Räsänen were born over a hundred years ago — the very same design that can still be found on every Räsänen today.

When it was first cast into the crystal-clear salmon waters of the Teno River, a legend was born. On its very first evening of fishing, it produced such an impressive salmon catch that the other fishermen in the village soon wanted one of these new fish-catching machines for themselves. Larger and smaller versions of the spoon were made, and they spread throughout Finland with anglers. Before long, Räsänen was successfully catching pike, perch and zander as well.
